Toei Animation Museum Guide: Visiting Japan’s Animation History in Tokyo

Toei Animation (東映アニメーション) is one of Japan’s oldest and most influential animation studios — responsible for iconic series including Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, One Piece, Digimon, and PreCure, among hundreds of others. The Toei Animation Museum (東映アニメーションミュージアム) in Nerima, Tokyo, offers a free look at the studio’s history and production process, making it one of Tokyo’s most accessible anime destinations.

The Museum

The museum occupies the ground floor of Toei Animation’s main office building. The permanent exhibition covers the studio’s history from its 1956 founding through its landmark productions across seven decades. Original cels, production materials, and character displays from major series are exhibited. The museum regularly refreshes its displays to coincide with current productions and anniversaries.

What to See

Dragon Ball exhibits covering Akira Toriyama’s character designs and production artwork are among the most popular permanent displays. Sailor Moon exhibits attract significant international interest. The One Piece corner reflects the series’ ongoing status as one of Japan’s longest-running anime. Costume and prop displays from live-action adaptations add variety to the animation focus.

Nerima Ward

Nerima is Tokyo’s anime production district — a significant number of anime studios are clustered here, reflecting the ward’s character as a creative hub. The Nerima City office promotes this heritage through local signage and events.

Access

The museum is a 5-minute walk from Ochiai-Minami-Nagasaki station on the Seibu Ikebukuro Line, or 10 minutes from Shin-Egota on the Oedo Line. From Ikebukuro, the journey takes about 10 minutes. Admission is free — no advance booking required.

Best Time to Visit

The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday. Special exhibitions tied to anniversary productions or new releases add additional content throughout the year. Combining with nearby Toshima and Ikebukuro offers a full day in west Tokyo.
