Ghibli Museum Mitaka Guide: Visiting Studio Ghibli’s Magical Museum in Tokyo

The Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, western Tokyo, is one of Japan’s most beloved and unique visitor experiences. Designed by Hayao Miyazaki himself and opened in 2001, the museum is built to feel like stepping inside a Ghibli film — winding staircases, a rooftop garden with a giant robot soldier from Castle in the Sky, exclusive short films screened in the Saturn Theatre, and exhibition rooms covering the animation production process with Miyazaki’s characteristic warmth and detail.

Getting Tickets

Tickets must be purchased in advance — walk-in entry is not available. International visitors can book through the Lawson ticket system (l-tike.com) or via authorised travel agencies. Tickets sell out extremely quickly, especially for weekends and school holidays. Check availability at least one month in advance and book immediately when slots open. Entry is for a specific date and time slot.

Inside the Museum

The permanent exhibitions cover how animation is made — from initial sketches and storyboards through to completed frames — using displays, original artwork, and hands-on elements. The Saturn Theatre screens exclusive short films (typically 15 minutes) not available anywhere else. The rooftop garden and the giant robot soldier are accessible from the upper floors. The Straw Hat Cafe serves Ghibli-themed food and drinks. The Mamma Aiuto shop sells exclusive merchandise unavailable elsewhere.

Getting There

The Ghibli Museum is in Inokashira Park in Mitaka. Take the JR Chuo Line from Shinjuku to Mitaka station (about 20 minutes), then a 15-minute walk through the park or a shuttle bus from the station’s south exit. The walk through Inokashira Park is pleasant and recommended.

Best Time to Visit

Weekday morning slots are the least crowded. Spring cherry blossom season in Inokashira Park (late March to early April) adds exceptional beauty to the visit. Any season works — the museum is entirely indoor and the park is beautiful year-round.
