The Kyoto International Manga Museum (京都国際マンガミュージアム) is one of Japan’s most distinctive cultural institutions — a former elementary school in central Kyoto converted into a manga archive, exhibition space, and reading library containing over 300,000 items. The museum celebrates manga as one of Japan’s defining art forms, combining academic research, public accessibility, and genuine love for the medium in a beautiful historic building.
The Manga Wall
The museum’s most famous feature is the Wall of Manga — floor-to-ceiling shelving covering the school corridor walls, packed with manga volumes available for visitors to take down and read anywhere in the building. The collection spans decades and genres, from prewar kamishibai (picture card shows) through postwar gekiga and contemporary shonen and shojo manga. Visitors can spend hours reading for the price of admission.
Exhibitions and Activities
Temporary exhibitions on specific artists, genres, or international manga are held throughout the year. Manga artists demonstrate their craft in live drawing sessions at scheduled times. The research library is available to scholars with advance application. Foreign language manga — including English, French, and Chinese volumes — reflects the museum’s international outlook.
The Building
The former Tatsuike Elementary School building dates from the early 20th century — the red brick exterior and school architecture provide a charming contrast to the contemporary manga content. The courtyard garden is popular with visitors who bring volumes outside to read on sunny days.
Access
Karasuma Oike station on the Kyoto Municipal Subway (Karasuma Line and Tozai Line intersection) is a 2-minute walk. From Kyoto station, the journey takes about 10 minutes by subway. The museum is in central Kyoto, walking distance from Nijo Castle and the Karasuma business district.
Best Time to Visit
Any season suits the museum — it is entirely indoor. Combining with Nijo Castle, the Imperial Palace gardens, and the Karasuma shopping district makes for a full Kyoto day trip focused on culture and history.
