Kinosaki Onsen: Japan’s Most Charming Hot Spring Town (7 Baths, 1 Yukata)

Most hot spring towns have a bathhouse. Kinosaki Onsen has seven — and the entire culture of the town is built around moving between them in a yukata, wooden sandals clacking on the stone-paved streets.

The Seven Bath Hop

Each of Kinosaki’s seven public bathhouses has a different character — one has a cave bath, one has a rooftop bath, one is built around a waterfall. Most ryokan include a pass to all seven. Guests spend the day rotating between them, comparing waters and atmospheres.

The Town Is the Experience

The Otani River runs through Kinosaki, lined with willow trees and traditional wooden inn facades. Walking this street in a yukata at dusk, lanterns lit, steam visible from the bathhouse entrances — it’s a scene that exists nowhere else in Japan.

Getting There

From Osaka, the Limited Express Kounotori takes about 2.5 hours. One night minimum is essential — the town comes alive in the evening.
