Yoron Island Beach Guide: The Japanese Maldives

Yoron Island, the southernmost inhabited island of Kagoshima Prefecture, sits at the northern edge of the Okinawa coral reef system. Its beaches are legendary among Japanese travellers — the water so clear and the sand so bright white that the island has earned the nickname the Japanese Maldives.

Key Beaches

Unda Beach on the northwest coast is the most famous — shallow turquoise water over white sand extending far out to sea, creating a natural sandbar that disappears at high tide. Oganzaki Beach on the north tip offers dramatic sunset views across the East China Sea. The coral reefs around the island are among Kagoshima’s finest.

Best Time to Visit

May to September offers warm water and calm seas. The island hosts the Yoron Marathon each spring, attracting runners from across Japan who come for the coastal scenery as much as the race.

Access

Yoron Airport is served by flights from Kagoshima and Naha. A ferry also runs from Kagoshima, stopping at several islands en route. The island is small enough to explore by rental bicycle or scooter.
