Bora Bora Beach Guide: The Pearl of the Pacific

Bora Bora in French Polynesia is widely considered the most beautiful island on Earth. The dramatic volcanic peak of Mount Otemanu rises 727 metres above a vast turquoise lagoon ringed by a coral reef and scattered motus (sand islets). Overwater bungalows on stilts above the lagoon have made Bora Bora the defining image of paradise travel.

The Lagoon

The Bora Bora lagoon shifts through extraordinary shades of blue and green — from pale jade in the shallows to vivid cobalt at the reef edge. Coral gardens and tropical fish are visible in the clear water without any equipment. The lagoon is calm and warm year-round, sheltered from open ocean swell by the surrounding reef.

Matira Beach

Matira Beach on the southern tip of the main island is the only public beach on Bora Bora — a long crescent of white sand with shallow turquoise water and views across the lagoon to Mount Otemanu. Sunrise and sunset here are spectacular.

Access

Fly from Tahiti (Papeete) to Bora Bora Airport (45 minutes). International connections from Los Angeles, Tokyo, Sydney, and Paris connect to Tahiti. A boat transfer from the airport to your resort crosses the lagoon.
