Miyako Island in Okinawa Prefecture is home to Yonaha Maehama Beach — a 7km sweep of pure white sand consistently ranked as Japan’s most beautiful beach. The shallow lagoon shifts from pale turquoise to deep cobalt as the water deepens, creating views more reminiscent of the Maldives than mainland Japan.
Key Beaches
Yonaha Maehama Beach on the west coast is the flagship — wide, long, and lined with casuarina trees. Sunayama Beach to the north features a distinctive natural rock arch framing the ocean view. Yoshino Beach on the east coast has shallow coral gardens alive with tropical fish, perfect for snorkelling without a boat.
Best Time to Visit
May to October is peak season for warm ocean swimming. The summer months bring the deepest blue colour to the water. Spring offers comfortable temperatures and quieter beaches before the main tourist rush.
Access
Direct flights connect Miyako Airport to Tokyo (about 3 hours), Osaka, and Naha. A rental car is strongly recommended — the best beaches are spread across the island and surrounding islets connected by bridges.
