Zanzibar Beach Guide: Spice Island Beaches and Swahili Culture

Zanzibar, the semi-autonomous archipelago off Tanzania’s coast, combines powder-white beaches with extraordinary cultural depth. Stone Town — a UNESCO World Heritage Site of narrow winding lanes, carved wooden doors, and Swahili architecture — sits within easy reach of some of East Africa’s most beautiful coastline. The Indian Ocean water along the east and north coasts is exceptionally clear and warm.

Key Beaches

Nungwi Beach at the northern tip is the most popular resort area — calm, clear water, minimal tidal change, and a lively local fishing village atmosphere. Kendwa Beach nearby is similarly beautiful and slightly more sheltered. Paje on the east coast has consistent wind conditions and attracts kitesurfers, with shallow turquoise water over white sand stretching to the reef edge.

Best Time to Visit

The dry seasons from June to October and from December to February offer the best beach conditions. The ocean is warm year-round between 25 and 29 degrees Celsius.

Access

Fly from Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar Airport (20 minutes) or take the high-speed ferry (2 hours). International connections arrive via Nairobi or Addis Ababa. Combine with a Serengeti or Kilimanjaro safari for a classic East Africa itinerary.
