Taketomi Island Beach Guide: Kondoi Beach and a Living Ryukyu Village

Taketomi Island, a tiny coral island 10 minutes by ferry from Ishigaki, is one of Japan’s most distinctive travel destinations. An immaculately preserved Ryukyu village of red-tiled rooftops and stone walls sits at the island’s centre, surrounded by flat coral terrain and beaches famous for their star-shaped sand.

Key Beaches

Kondoi Beach on the west coast is the main swimming beach — shallow, calm, vivid turquoise water over white sand. Star sand (the tiny fragments of foraminifera shells shaped like stars) can be found here and at Kaiji Beach nearby. The sight of black water buffalo carts rolling past the coral walls toward the beach is uniquely Taketomi.

Best Time to Visit

October to May offers pleasant temperatures and calmer seas. Summer is hot and humid with typhoon risk. The island’s small size means it can be busy at peak times — early morning visits give a quieter, more magical experience.

Access

Ferry from Ishigaki Port (10 minutes). Ishigaki is served by direct flights from Tokyo and Osaka. Rent a bicycle on Taketomi — the island is perfectly flat and small enough to circle in under an hour.
