Nusa Penida, a rugged island 45 minutes by fast boat from Bali, has become one of Indonesia’s most photographed destinations. Its dramatic coastline of sheer limestone cliffs dropping to hidden turquoise beaches, accessible only by steep paths or boat, offers scenery completely different from mainland Bali. The island’s wild, undeveloped character makes it feel like a different world.
Key Beaches
Kelingking Beach is the most iconic — a tiny crescent of white sand at the base of a T-Rex shaped limestone headland, accessible by a steep and challenging trail. The view from the cliff top is one of the most dramatic in Southeast Asia. Crystal Bay on the northwest coast is calmer and more accessible, with clear water and good snorkelling.
Angel’s Billabong
This natural rock pool at the island’s southwestern tip fills with crystal-clear water at low tide, creating a natural infinity pool overlooking the open ocean. Timing the visit for low tide reveals the pool at its most photogenic.
Access
Fast boats depart from Sanur Beach in Bali (45 minutes). Organised day tours from Bali are popular. Staying overnight on the island avoids the day-trip crowds and allows earlier access to key viewpoints before the boats arrive.
