Kakeroma Island, connected to Amami-Oshima by a short bridge, is one of the most unspoiled islands in the Nansei Islands chain. Its coastline of hidden beaches, mangrove channels, and dramatic rock formations remains largely undiscovered by mainstream tourism, offering a raw and authentic island experience.
Scenery and Beaches
The island’s western coast has several small sand beaches tucked between rocky headlands, reachable only by boat or on foot through subtropical forest. The mangrove forest at the island’s northern end is the second-largest in Japan — kayaking through the channels at low tide is one of Amami’s finest experiences. The ocean colour along the western shores rivals anywhere in Okinawa.
Best Time to Visit
October to May for more settled weather and comfortable temperatures. Summer is very hot and humid with high typhoon risk. The island is especially peaceful in spring when azaleas and subtropical wildflowers cover the hillsides.
Access
A short road bridge connects Kakeroma to Amami-Oshima. Fly to Amami Airport from Tokyo (2.5 hours), Osaka, or Kagoshima. A rental car or scooter gives access to the island’s remote coast roads.
