Chicago is one of America’s greatest cities — and one of its most underrated by international visitors. Most people visiting the US head straight to New York or Los Angeles, but Chicago deserves a place on every traveler’s itinerary. Here’s everything you need to know.
When to Visit
Chicago has extreme seasons. Summer (June–August) is the best time to visit — warm, sunny, and packed with outdoor festivals. Spring and fall are pleasant but unpredictable. Winter is brutal — the nickname “Windy City” is earned, and temperatures can drop well below freezing. If you can, visit between May and October.
Getting Around
Chicago has an excellent public transit system called the CTA (Chicago Transit Authority). The L train (elevated rail) covers most of the city and runs 24 hours on weekends. A Ventra card works like Tokyo’s Suica — tap in and out. A single ride is $2.50.
The city is also very walkable in the downtown area (called the Loop) and along the lakefront.
Must-See Attractions
Millennium Park is the heart of downtown Chicago. Cloud Gate (the famous “Bean” sculpture) is here — it’s free and one of the most photographed spots in America. The park hosts free concerts in summer.
Navy Pier stretches into Lake Michigan and offers great views of the skyline. It’s touristy but worth a visit.
The Chicago Riverwalk is a beautiful waterfront path along the Chicago River. Walk it at sunset for stunning views of the architecture.
The Art Institute of Chicago is world-class. The Impressionist collection is particularly remarkable. Budget half a day minimum.
Chicago Architecture: The city is considered the birthplace of modern architecture. Architecture boat tours along the Chicago River are highly recommended — you’ll see over 50 landmark buildings explained by a guide.
Food
Chicago is a serious food city. Things you must eat: deep-dish pizza (try Lou Malnati’s or Giordano’s), a Chicago-style hot dog (no ketchup — it’s a local rule), an Italian beef sandwich, and Chicago-style popcorn (cheddar and caramel mixed together).
The city’s restaurant scene is also world-class. The West Loop neighborhood has become one of the best dining destinations in America.
Neighborhoods to Explore
The Loop is the downtown business district. Wicker Park and Bucktown are hip and artsy. Lincoln Park is beautiful and residential. Pilsen has incredible Mexican food and street art. Hyde Park is home to the University of Chicago and the Obama Presidential Center.
Practical Tips
Lake Michigan is enormous — it looks like an ocean. The lakefront path stretches for miles and is perfect for walking, running, or cycling.
Chicago summers are festival season — Lollapalooza, the Chicago Jazz Festival, and the Chicago Air and Water Show all happen in summer and many are free.
Tipping is the same as New York — 18–20% at restaurants.
Chicago is a city that rewards exploration. Get off the tourist trail, explore the neighborhoods, and eat as much as possible.
