The Kuma River valley in southern Kumamoto Prefecture — centred on the castle town of Hitoyoshi — is widely identified as the primary inspiration for the peaceful rural Japan depicted in Natsume’s Book of Friends (夏目友人帳). The anime’s depiction of a teenage boy who can see supernatural creatures (yokai) in a quietly beautiful Japanese countryside has earned it a devoted following for its warmth, melancholy, and visual poetry.
Hitoyoshi and the Kuma River
Hitoyoshi is one of Kyushu’s most charming small cities — a castle town surrounded by mountains with the Kuma River running through it. The riverside scenery, traditional buildings, and unhurried pace of life closely match the anime’s rural Japan atmosphere. The Kuma River is famous for traditional wooden boat rafting (kudari) — one of Japan’s most distinctive river tourism experiences.
Aoi Aso Shrine
The Aoi Aso Shrine in Hitoyoshi — one of Kyushu’s most important Shinto sites — is a setting directly referenced in Natsume’s Book of Friends. The ancient approach through forested grounds and the main hall’s architecture reflect the anime’s reverent treatment of traditional spiritual sites.
Hitoyoshi Onsen
Hitoyoshi has a cluster of hot spring inns (ryokan) along the river — bathing in an onsen with river views recreates something of the contemplative atmosphere the anime captures so well. The local shochu (sweet potato spirits) distilleries and traditional crafts add further depth to a visit.
Access
Take the JR Hisatsu Line from Kumamoto (about 2 hours) to Hitoyoshi station. The Hisatsu Line itself is one of Kyushu’s most scenic railways — the journey through mountain valleys is atmospheric in its own right. From Kagoshima, the journey takes about 2.5 hours.
Best Time to Visit
Autumn (October to November) when the mountain foliage turns golden and red is the most beautiful season. Spring rice planting and summer river activities complement any Natsume pilgrimage with genuine rural Japan experiences.
