Hateruma Island Beach Guide: Japan’s Southernmost Paradise

Hateruma Island is Japan’s southernmost inhabited island, a small coral atoll at the very tip of the Yaeyama Islands group. Nishihama Beach here is widely considered one of the finest beaches in Japan — an arc of brilliant white sand facing an ocean of extraordinary clarity and colour.

Nishihama Beach

Nishihama Beach stretches for 600 metres along the island’s southern coast. The water is an impossibly vivid shade of blue-green, the sand powder-fine and white. The beach is rarely crowded — the remoteness of Hateruma keeps visitor numbers low, preserving an atmosphere of quiet perfection that more accessible islands cannot match.

Night Skies

Hateruma sits below the Tropic of Cancer — Japan’s darkest night skies are found here. The Southern Cross constellation is visible from the island, a rarity in Japan. The Hateruma Stargazing Tower operates on clear nights, offering telescope access to southern constellations invisible from mainland Japan.

Access

High-speed ferry from Ishigaki Port (approximately 60 minutes, weather permitting). Ishigaki is served by direct flights from Tokyo and Osaka. The ferry can be cancelled in rough weather — build extra days into your itinerary for flexibility.
