Phi Phi Islands Beach Guide: Thailand’s Most Iconic Tropical Scenery

The Phi Phi Islands in southern Thailand are among Asia’s most dramatic island scenery — sheer limestone cliffs plunging directly into turquoise water, hidden beaches accessible only by long-tail boat, and coral reefs surrounding the islands. Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh, featured in the film The Beach, is among the world’s most photographed coastal landscapes.

Maya Bay

Maya Bay is a near-enclosed cove of turquoise water surrounded by towering limestone walls. After years of closure for ecological recovery, the bay has reopened with strict visitor limits — the coral and marine life have recovered dramatically. Early morning visits before the tour boats arrive offer a magical, almost deserted experience.

Phi Phi Don

The larger inhabited island has Long Beach and Loh Moo Dee Beach on its quieter eastern side, with clear water and good snorkelling close to shore. The twin-bayed village area bustles with restaurants and beach bars but becomes peaceful in the early morning hours.

Access

Ferries depart from Krabi (1.5 hours) and Phuket (2 hours). Speedboat transfers (45 minutes from either) are faster. No cars exist on the island — everything is reached on foot or by long-tail boat.
