Flagship Species
Flamingos of Lake Nakuru
Lake Nakuru in the Rift Valley is famous for concentrations of Lesser and Greater Flamingos turning the lake shores pink. Up to 2 million flamingos have gathered here — a spectacle visible from space. African Fish Eagle, Goliath Heron, and White Pelican add to the extraordinary waterbird tableau.
Masai Mara Raptors
The Masai Mara hosts Africa’s finest raptor diversity with 50-plus species including Martial Eagle, Bateleur, Secretarybird, and all three vulture species. Birds of prey are visible perching, soaring, and feeding at kills throughout the reserve.
Kakamega Forest Specialties
Kakamega Forest in western Kenya — the easternmost outlier of the Congo Basin forest — holds species found nowhere else in East Africa: Great Blue Turaco, Black-and-white Casqued Hornbill, and Grey Parrot among them.
Best Time to Visit
- Jun-Sep: Dry season; Great Migration peak in Masai Mara; best game viewing
- Nov-Apr: Migrant birds present; flamingos unpredictable; green and lush
Travel Tips
Nairobi is Kenya’s gateway with excellent international connections. The classic Northern Circuit covers Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha, and the Masai Mara.
