The Yaeyama Islands — Ishigaki, Iriomote, Yonaguni, and their neighbours at Japan’s southwestern tip — host a stunning assemblage of subtropical birds found nowhere else in Japan. Dense jungle, mangrove waterways, and coral-fringed shores create exceptional habitat for species endemic to the Ryukyu Archipelago.
Star Birds
Crested Serpent Eagle (Ryukyu Subspecies)
The resident Crested Serpent Eagle is a commanding raptor often seen soaring over Iriomote’s jungle interior. Its distinctive call rings through the forest canopy throughout the year.
Ryukyu Scops Owl
The Ryukyu Scops Owl, a small endemic owl, calls from dense forest after dark. Spotlighting tours on Iriomote give regular sightings.
Other Rare Species
Iriomote Cat (also a birding distraction), Black-naped Oriole, Japanese Bush Warbler, Fairy Pitta, various kingfisher species, and the Okinawa Rail (on Okinawa Island) are among the highlights. Winter migrants from mainland Asia add White’s Thrush, Blue-and-white Flycatcher, and many others.
Best Time to Visit
- Winter (Oct-Mar): Cooler, drier, more comfortable; excellent for forest birds
- Spring (Apr-May): Migration; Fairy Pitta passes through
- Summer (Jun-Sep): Hot; breeding season for resident species
Travel Tips
Ishigaki is served by direct flights from Tokyo (3.5 hours) and Osaka. Ferry services connect to Iriomote. Hire a kayak or join a river tour to explore Iriomote’s mangroves. The jungle interior is best explored with a local guide familiar with rare species locations.
