Shiretoko Bird Watching Guide: Eagles, Seabirds and Wilderness

The Shiretoko Peninsula in northeastern Hokkaido is a UNESCO World Heritage wilderness and one of Asia’s premier eagle-watching destinations. Where the Okhotsk Sea meets the land, an extraordinary concentration of raptors, seabirds, and forest owls creates a birding experience unlike anywhere else in Japan.

Star Birds

Steller’s Sea Eagle

Shiretoko is the most reliable location in the world to see the magnificent Steller’s Sea Eagle — the world’s heaviest eagle. Up to 400 individuals winter along the coastline from November to March, roosting on sea ice and hunting for fish. Winter boat cruises bring observers within metres of these spectacular birds.

Blakiston’s Fish Owl

The enormous Blakiston’s Fish Owl — the world’s largest owl — inhabits Shiretoko’s old-growth forests along salmon-bearing rivers. Nocturnal spotlighting tours from Shari give a rare chance to see this endangered giant hunting at night.

Other Species

White-tailed Eagles are abundant year-round. Spectacled Guillemots, Ancient Murrelets, and Rhinoceros Auklets breed on coastal cliffs. Japanese Pygmy Woodpecker, Siberian Jay, and Nutcracker inhabit the forest interior.

Best Time to Visit

  • Winter (Jan-Mar): Peak eagle season on sea ice; the classic Shiretoko wildlife experience
  • Spring (Apr-May): Forest birds active; bears visible on hillsides
  • Summer (Jun-Aug): Seabird colonies active; boat tours along the cliff coastline

Travel Tips

Utoro (on the west coast) and Rausu (on the east coast) are the main bases. Winter eagle boat tours depart from Rausu. The Shiretoko Five Lakes trail is excellent for forest and wetland birding. Roads into the peninsula close in winter — a 4WD vehicle is recommended in icy conditions.
