Zamami Island is the largest and most accessible of the Kerama Islands, and the best base for experiencing the extraordinary ocean colour known as Kerama Blue. The island’s beaches and surrounding waters are protected within Kerama Islands National Park, preserving coral reefs of exceptional health and beauty.
Key Beaches
Furuzamami Beach is Zamami’s showpiece — a wide arc of powdery white sand curving around a bay of vivid turquoise water. The snorkelling directly from the beach encounters coral gardens alive with tropical fish. Ama Beach on the neighbouring island of Aka, reached by a short boat ride, is quieter and equally beautiful.
Whale Watching
From January to March, humpback whales migrate through the Kerama Strait directly in front of Zamami Island. The combination of whale watching from the beach or by boat with the island’s extraordinary ocean scenery makes winter visits uniquely rewarding.
Access
High-speed ferry from Naha Tomari Port reaches Zamami in 50 minutes. A slower car ferry also connects daily. The island has small guesthouses and diving operations — accommodation books quickly in summer and should be reserved well in advance.
