Yamaguchi Prefecture: Underground Caves, Fugu & the Gateway to Kyushu

Yamaguchi is the westernmost prefecture of Honshu — a land of dramatic underground caverns, the world’s most famous fugu (blowfish) market, explosive geothermal landscapes, and the historic port of Shimonoseki where Japan’s modern era began.

Top Attractions

1. Akiyoshido Cave

Japan’s largest limestone cave system stretches for over 10km beneath the Akiyoshi plateau. The illuminated stalactites and stalagmites in the vast chambers are genuinely spectacular — one of Japan’s great natural wonders.

2. Shimonoseki & Kanmon Strait

The narrow strait between Honshu and Kyushu has been one of Japan’s most strategically important waterways for millennia. Shimonoseki is the global capital of fugu (pufferfish) — safely prepared by licensed chefs and served in every form imaginable.

3. Hagi

A beautifully preserved castle town that was the birthplace of the Meiji Restoration leaders — Ito Hirobumi and Yamagata Aritomo both came from Hagi. The white-walled samurai district and the famed Hagi-yaki pottery tradition make it one of Japan’s finest historic towns.

Food & Drink

Fugu (blowfish) is Shimonoseki’s specialty — the Karato Market sells it fresh every morning. Hagi is famous for its Natsumikan (summer mandarin) and outstanding Japanese sweets.

Getting There

From Hiroshima, the Sanyo Shinkansen reaches Shin-Yamaguchi in about 30 minutes. Shimonoseki is about 1 hour from Hiroshima.
