Toyama sits between the Japan Sea and the dramatic Northern Alps — one of Japan’s most scenically spectacular prefectures. Its legendary alpine route, fresh seafood from Toyama Bay, and distinctive black ramen make it an increasingly popular destination.
Top Attractions
1. Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route
One of Japan’s great mountain journeys, the Alpine Route crosses the Northern Alps via cable cars, trolleybuses, and ropeways. The highlight is the Yukino Otani — a corridor through walls of snow up to 20 meters high — open from mid-April when the route first opens.
2. Gokayama
A UNESCO World Heritage Site shared with neighboring Shirakawa-go, Gokayama’s remote village of gasshō-zukuri (steep thatched-roof) farmhouses sits in a deep mountain valley. Less visited than Shirakawa-go, it retains a more authentic, peaceful atmosphere.
3. Toyama Bay
Toyama Bay is one of Japan’s greatest seafood sources — its unusual depth (300m just offshore) brings cold, nutrient-rich currents that produce outstanding fish. Firefly squid fishing from April to June is a unique spectacle.
Food & Drink
Toyama Black Ramen — intensely dark, salty, soy-based broth — is one of Japan’s most distinctive regional styles. Also famous: Masu-zushi (trout pressed sushi in bamboo leaves), Shiroebi (white shrimp), and fresh firefly squid.
Getting There
From Tokyo, the Hokuriku Shinkansen reaches Toyama in about 2 hours 10 minutes.
