Takarazuka Anime Pilgrimage Guide: Osamu Tezuka’s Hometown in Hyogo

Takarazuka in Hyogo Prefecture holds a unique place in Japanese cultural history — it is the birthplace of Osamu Tezuka (手塚治虫), universally known as the God of Manga (漫画の神様). Tezuka created Astro Boy (鉄腕アトム), Black Jack, Jungle Emperor Leo, and hundreds of other works that defined the visual language of modern manga and anime. The Tezuka Osamu Memorial Museum in Takarazuka is the definitive pilgrimage for anyone interested in the foundations of anime as an art form.

Tezuka Osamu Memorial Museum

The museum, opened in 1994, is designed by architect Tadao Ando and built close to Tezuka’s childhood home. The permanent collection covers Tezuka’s complete works with original manuscripts, character evolution charts, and thematic exhibitions on his most important series. The anime screening room shows classic Tezuka adaptations. The museum’s commitment to Tezuka’s humanist philosophy — evident in his works’ consistent themes of life, death, and coexistence — makes it intellectually substantial as well as visually spectacular.

Takarazuka Grand Theatre

Takarazuka is also famous for the Takarazuka Revue — an all-female musical theatre company founded in 1913 that performs spectacular Western-style musicals to devoted audiences. Tezuka grew up attending performances, and the Revue’s theatrical influence is visible in his work. The Grand Theatre is steps from the memorial museum.

Access

Takarazuka station is served by the Hankyu Takarazuka Line from Osaka Umeda (about 35 minutes) and the JR Fukuchiyama Line from Osaka (about 30 minutes). The museum is a 10-minute walk from the station along a pleasant riverside promenade.

Best Time to Visit

Any season suits Takarazuka — the museum is engaging regardless of weather. Cherry blossom season along the Muko River promenade leading to the museum is particularly beautiful.
