Seattle Travel Guide: Coffee, Grunge & the Pacific Northwest

Seattle is one of America’s most livable and spectacular cities — a place where snowcapped Mount Rainier dominates the horizon, where the world’s most innovative tech companies were born, and where coffee culture, the grunge music revolution, and a passionate commitment to the natural world define the city’s character. Set between Puget Sound and Lake Washington, Seattle’s dramatic topography makes it one of the most beautiful urban environments in North America.

Top Attractions

1. Pike Place Market

Pike Place Market — established in 1907 — is one of America’s oldest and most beloved public markets. Watch fishmongers throw enormous Pacific salmon across the stalls, browse vendors selling Dungeness crab, fresh flower bouquets, and artisan crafts. The first-ever Starbucks store (1912 Pike Place) is in the market. The market’s Lower Level is a maze of antique dealers and specialty shops.

2. Space Needle & Seattle Center

The Space Needle — built for the 1962 World’s Fair — remains Seattle’s most iconic landmark. The rotating glass floor observation deck offers 360-degree views of the city, Puget Sound, the Cascades, and Mount Rainier on clear days. Seattle Center also houses the extraordinary Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP), designed by Frank Gehry and celebrating music, science fiction, and pop culture.

3. Nature & the Outdoors

Seattle is the gateway to extraordinary natural environments. Mount Rainier National Park’s glaciated volcano is a 2-hour drive away. Olympic National Park’s temperate rainforests and rugged coastline are accessible by ferry across Puget Sound. The San Juan Islands offer world-class whale watching for orca, humpback, and minke whales. Discovery Park and the waterfront provide natural respite within the city.

4. Food & Coffee Culture

Seattle’s food scene is defined by extraordinary Pacific Northwest seafood — wild salmon, Dungeness crab, oysters, and halibut. Tom Douglas’s restaurant empire, Canlis (with views across Lake Union), and the emerging Capitol Hill dining scene lead the pack. Seattle’s coffee culture is legendary — beyond Starbucks, independent roasters like Victrola, Caffe Vita, and Espresso Vivace have made the city a global coffee capital.

Best Time to Visit

  • Summer (Jun–Sep): Seattle’s spectacular sunny season — long days, outdoor concerts, farmers markets
  • Spring (Apr–May): Cherry blossoms at the University of Washington, milder crowds
  • Autumn (Oct): Fall colors, mushroom foraging season, first storms dramatic on the Sound
  • Winter (Nov–Mar): Grey and rainy, but excellent for museum-hopping and ski trips to the Cascades

Travel Tips

Link Light Rail connects SeaTac Airport to downtown efficiently. Seattle is very walkable downtown, though the hills can be challenging. A ferry ride to Bainbridge Island (35 minutes, round-trip views of the skyline) is one of the city’s great free pleasures. Dress in layers — Seattle’s weather can change several times in a single day.
