Kyoto Animation (京都アニメーション, known as KyoAni) is one of Japan’s most acclaimed anime studios — responsible for K-On!, Violet Evergarden, Sound! Euphonium, A Silent Voice, and numerous other productions celebrated for exceptional visual quality, emotional depth, and the respectful treatment of source material. Based in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, the studio has built a devoted international following and holds a special place in anime history.
Visiting KyoAni
Kyoto Animation’s studio buildings are in the residential Ogura area of Uji — fans sometimes visit the exterior, but the facilities are not open for public tours. The studio’s small official shop near the studio location occasionally opens for special events. Respectful distance from the working facilities is appreciated by the studio and staff.
KyoAni’s Uji Locations
Uji itself — the setting for Sound! Euphonium — provides the most meaningful KyoAni pilgrimage experience. The Uji Bridge, Byodoin Temple, Uji River promenade, and the specific locations mapped in Sound! Euphonium guides available at the local tourist office recreate the anime’s Uji in extraordinary detail. The care with which KyoAni depicts Uji reflects the studio’s commitment to authentic location research.
KyoAni Shop and Cafe
The official KyoAni shop (open on specific days — check the official website) sells exclusive studio merchandise not available elsewhere. The shop’s location and opening schedule are updated on the KyoAni website regularly.
A Silent Voice Locations
The 2016 film A Silent Voice (Koe no Katachi) is set in Ogaki City in Gifu Prefecture — particularly the Suimon River canal area and the Ogaki Castle grounds. The film’s emotional resonance makes this a deeply meaningful pilgrimage for many fans.
Access
Uji is 18 minutes from Kyoto station by JR Nara Line. Ogaki (for A Silent Voice locations) is about 30 minutes from Nagoya by JR or Kintetsu.
