Komodo Island Beach Guide: Pink Sand, Dragons and Pristine Diving

Komodo Island in Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara Province is famous for its Komodo dragons — the world’s largest living lizards. But the island and its neighbours within Komodo National Park also possess some of the most extraordinary beaches and marine environments in all of Southeast Asia, including the world-famous Pink Beach.

Pink Beach

Komodo’s Pink Beach gets its distinctive rosy colour from fragments of red coral mixed into the white sand. The effect is subtle in overcast conditions but vivid in bright sunlight, creating a beach unlike almost anywhere else on Earth. The snorkelling directly from the beach reveals extraordinary coral gardens and tropical fish in clear warm water.

Komodo Dragons

Ranger-guided walks on Komodo and Rinca Islands give close encounters with dragons up to 3 metres in length. The animals are genuinely wild and genuinely dangerous — guides keep visitors safe while allowing natural behaviour to be observed at close range.

Access

Fly from Bali to Labuan Bajo Airport on Flores Island (1.5 hours). Liveaboard boats and day-trip speedboats depart from Labuan Bajo harbour. Labuan Bajo has grown rapidly as a tourist hub with many accommodation and restaurant options.
