Kerama Islands Beach Guide: Japan’s Clearest Ocean Water

The Kerama Islands, a cluster of small islands 30km west of Naha, are home to what the Japanese call Kerama Blue — a shade of ocean so vivid and transparent that visibility can exceed 50 metres. Protected as a National Park, the islands offer some of the most pristine beaches and coral reefs in all of Asia.

Key Beaches

Furuzamami Beach on Zamami Island is consistently ranked among Japan’s finest beaches — powder white sand, shallow turquoise water, and surrounding coral. Ahi Beach on Aka Island is smaller and often deserted. Tokashiku Beach on Tokashiku Island offers calm, sheltered water ideal for swimming.

Best Time to Visit

The ocean is warm and calm from May through October. July and August bring the clearest visibility. The winter months from November to March see cooler water but fewer crowds and lower prices.

Access

High-speed ferry from Naha Tomari Port reaches Zamami in 50 minutes. A slower car ferry also connects the islands. Day trips from Naha are possible, but staying overnight gives time to explore the quieter beaches at dawn and dusk.
