How to Get a Japan Visa: A Complete Guide for International Tourists

Planning a trip to Japan? One of the first things to sort out is whether you need a visa. The good news is that Japan has visa-free agreements with many countries. Here’s everything you need to know.

Do You Need a Visa?

Japan offers visa-free entry to citizens of over 60 countries for short-term stays (usually 90 days or less). Citizens of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, most EU countries, and many others do not need a visa for tourist visits.

Check the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs website for the complete and up-to-date list of visa-exempt countries.

If your country is on the visa-exempt list, you simply arrive in Japan and receive a stamp at immigration — no advance preparation needed.

For Countries That Require a Visa

If your country requires a visa, you’ll need to apply at the Japanese embassy or consulate in your home country before traveling.

Required documents typically include: a valid passport (at least 6 months validity beyond your stay), a completed visa application form, a recent passport-style photo, flight itinerary, hotel bookings or accommodation details, proof of sufficient funds (bank statements), and an itinerary of your trip.

Processing time is usually 5–7 business days. Apply at least 2–3 weeks before your trip.

At Immigration

When you arrive in Japan, you’ll go through immigration. Have these ready: your passport, your arrival card (filled out on the plane or at the airport), and your return flight information.

You’ll be asked about your purpose of visit (tourism), length of stay, and where you’ll be staying. Answer honestly and simply.

Fingerprints and a photo will be taken — this is standard procedure for all foreign visitors.

Extending Your Stay

If you’re on a 90-day visa-free entry and want to stay longer, you can apply for an extension at a regional immigration office in Japan. Extensions are not guaranteed and are evaluated case by case.

Practical Tips

Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay in Japan.

Keep a copy of your hotel bookings and return flight — immigration officers sometimes ask to see proof.

Japan’s immigration process is efficient and straightforward. If your documents are in order, the whole process takes 10–20 minutes at the airport.
