Goto Islands Beach Guide: Hidden Beaches and Crystal Water in Nagasaki

The Goto Islands — an archipelago of 150 islands off the western tip of Nagasaki Prefecture — are one of Kyushu’s best-kept secrets. Long isolated from mainstream tourism, the islands preserve beaches and ocean water of exceptional clarity, along with a distinctive cultural heritage shaped by centuries of hidden Christian history.

Key Beaches

Takahama Beach on Fukue Island is considered the finest in the Goto group — a wide crescent of white sand with water so transparent that the sandy bottom is clearly visible at depth. Dogashima Beach on the same island is smaller and more sheltered. The uninhabited outer islands accessible by charter boat reveal completely pristine coves with no facilities and no crowds.

Best Time to Visit

May to September for warm water swimming. The Goto Islands are less affected by typhoons than more southerly Okinawa — summer conditions are generally reliable.

Access

Ferry from Nagasaki Port to Fukue Island (about 3 hours) or high-speed jet ferry (1.5 hours). Flights connect Nagasaki Airport to Fukue Airport in 30 minutes. A rental car is essential for exploring Fukue Island’s beaches and the historic Christian village sites.
