Bird Watching

Borneo Bird Watching Guide: Hornbills and Pittas in Tropical Jungle

Borneo — shared between Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei — contains one of Asia’s oldest and richest tropical rainforests, home to extraordinary bird diversity. The island holds over 600 bird species, with a remarkable 57 endemics found nowhere else in the world. Hornbills, pittas, kingfishers, and flycatchers fill the canopy with colour and sound.

Star Birds

Rhinoceros Hornbill

Eight hornbill species inhabit Borneo’s forests, but the Rhinoceros Hornbill is the most spectacular — a massive black-and-white bird with an enormous casque above its bill. Watching a pair interact at a fruiting fig tree is one of the great Southeast Asian birding experiences. The Helmeted Hornbill, with its extraordinary solid casque, is increasingly rare due to illegal trade.

Bornean Bristlehead

The Bornean Bristlehead — a bizarre, crimson-headed bird whose evolutionary relationships puzzled ornithologists for a century — is endemic to Borneo’s lowland forests. Seeing this odd species in its family Pityriaseidae (the only member) is a major target for visiting birders.

Pittas

Seven pitta species inhabit Borneo’s forest floor, including Blue-headed Pitta, Black-crowned Pitta, and the increasingly rare Giant Pitta. Dawn walks along forest trails give the best chances of finding these jewel-like birds in damp leaf litter.

Best Time to Visit

  • Mar-Oct: Drier months on the west coast; better road access
  • Nov-Feb: Drier on Sabah’s east coast; peak birding for many species

Key Destinations

Kinabalu Park (Sabah) for montane endemics. Danum Valley for primary lowland forest and rare endemics. Tabin Wildlife Reserve for hornbills. Bako National Park (Sarawak) for proboscis monkeys and forest birds. The Kinabatangan River for boat-based birding combining birds, proboscis monkeys, and pygmy elephants.

Travel Tips

Kota Kinabalu (Sabah) is the main gateway. Specialist birding guides are essential — the difference in species found with a knowledgeable local guide is dramatic. Leeches are abundant in forest understorey — tuck trousers into socks and use repellent.
