The Stadio Giuseppe Meazza — known universally as San Siro — is one of the most recognisable stadiums in world football. The four distinctive cylindrical towers at the corners and the steep, enclosed three-tiered structure create a theatrical setting for football. Shared by AC Milan and Inter Milan, it holds 80,018 — when full and vocal for a European night, it is among the most atmospheric grounds in the world.
Getting Tickets
Tickets are available through the official AC Milan website (acmilan.com). The Derby della Madonnina — the Milan derby against Inter — is one of the hardest tickets in European football. Other Serie A and Champions League fixtures are more accessible. San Siro tours and the dedicated museum are available year-round.
Getting to the Stadium
San Siro is in western Milan, served by Lotto metro station on Line 5 (purple line) with a 10-minute walk, or San Siro Stadio station on the suburban railway network on match days. From central Milan, the journey takes 20 to 25 minutes. Bus services from the city centre also operate on match days.
Match Day Experience
The Curva Sud is AC Milan’s main ultras section, producing tifos and coordinated displays for big matches. San Siro’s enclosed design and steep upper tiers create a noise and visual spectacle that newer stadiums struggle to match. The approach through the Portello and Fiera districts has the feel of a proper Italian football pilgrimage.
Around Milan
Milan is Italy’s fashion and financial capital — the Duomo, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Leonardo’s Last Supper, and the Brera art gallery are the headline attractions. The city’s restaurant scene and aperitivo culture make it one of Italy’s finest food destinations.
Best Time to Visit
Champions League knockout fixtures at San Siro produce the most memorable atmospheres. The Milan Derby — when both Rossoneri and Nerazzurri sections of the Curva are in full voice — is a uniquely intense experience in world football.
