1. Takachiho Gorge & Amaterasu’s Cave
The dramatic Takachiho Gorge, carved by the Gokase River through volcanic basalt, is one of Japan’s most spectacular natural landscapes. Boat rides through the gorge past 17-meter Manai Falls are unforgettable. Nearby Amano Iwato Shrine marks the cave where the sun goddess Amaterasu is said to have hidden, plunging the world into darkness.
2. Cape Toi & Wild Horses
The dramatic headland of Cape Toi, on Miyazaki’s southern coast, is roamed by over 100 Misaki horses — one of Japan’s rarest native breeds, living wild on the clifftops above the Pacific.
3. Aoshima Island
A small tropical island connected to the mainland by a footbridge, surrounded by unusual “devil’s washboard” rock formations. The lush jungle island shrine is a perfect image of subtropical Japan.
Food & Drink
Miyazaki Mango — the “Egg of the Sun” brand — is the most expensive and coveted fruit in Japan, selling for up to ¥50,000 per box. Miyazaki Chicken (charcoal-grilled local breed) is outstanding. Hiyajiru (cold miso soup poured over rice with cucumber and tofu) is a refreshing summer specialty.
Getting There
From Fukuoka, flights reach Miyazaki in 50 minutes. Limited express trains take about 2.5 hours.
