Shizuoka is one of Japan’s most dramatically scenic prefectures — home to the southern slopes of Mt. Fuji, the deepest gorge in Japan, endless tea plantations, and some of the finest tuna in the world. This is also where Tokugawa Ieyasu — the shogun who unified Japan — was born, raised, and chose to retire.
Top Attractions
1. Mt. Fuji (South Side)
The southern approach to Mt. Fuji from Shizuoka offers a different perspective from the more famous Yamanashi views. The Fuji Skyline drive and Miho no Matsubara pine grove — where Fuji appears to rise directly from the sea — are spectacular.
2. Izu Peninsula
A rugged volcanic peninsula jutting into the Pacific, Izu offers dramatic hot springs (onsen), pristine beaches, fresh seafood, and the starting point of Japan’s Camino — the Izu Trail.
3. Kunozan Toshogu
Perched on a clifftop above Suruga Bay, this ornate shrine was built to honor Tokugawa Ieyasu and offers stunning views across the bay to Mt. Fuji.
Food & Drink
Shizuoka produces over 40% of Japan’s green tea — the rolling hillside plantations with Fuji in the background are iconic. Maguro (tuna) from Yaizu Port is world-class. Also famous: Sakura Ebi (cherry blossom shrimp) and fresh wasabi grown in mountain streams.
Getting There
The Tokaido Shinkansen connects Tokyo to Shizuoka in about 1 hour and to Hamamatsu in about 80 minutes.
