Why the World Is Obsessed with Japanese Sento and Sauna Culture

Wellness tourism is one of the fastest-growing travel categories globally. And Japan’s sento and sauna culture has become one of its most sought-after experiences.

What Is Sento?

Sento (銭湯) are Japan’s traditional public bathhouses. For around 400-600 yen, visitors wash thoroughly then soak in communal hot baths with various options: ultra-hot baths, electric baths, cold plunge pools, and outdoor baths.

The “Tottonoku” Ritual

Japan developed a distinct sauna ritual around achieving “tottonoku” (整う) — a meditative state of deep alignment through the hot-cold-rest cycle: sauna (80-90°C) → cold plunge (15-17°C) → outdoor rest → repeat 3-4 times. The result is euphoric and deeply restorative. This ritual is now spreading globally through wellness communities.
