Haikyuu!! (ハイキュー!!), Haruichi Furudate’s volleyball manga serialised in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2012 to 2020, became one of the most beloved sports anime of its generation — celebrated for its dynamic visual storytelling, memorable characters, and its portrayal of team sport as a profound human experience. The series is set in Miyagi Prefecture, and several real locations in the Sendai area are directly referenced.
Sendai and Miyagi
The fictional Karasuno High School is set in the mountains above Sendai, and real Miyagi mountain and countryside scenery provides the visual backdrop to the series. Sendai city itself — the largest city in Tohoku — features in several character scenes. The Sendai region’s strong volleyball culture (Miyagi has historically been one of Japan’s strongest volleyball prefectures) adds authenticity to the series’ setting.
Karasuno High School Model
While Karasuno is fictional, the location and visual design of the school draws on real Miyagi prefectural high schools in the area north of Sendai. The mountainous approach road, the gymnasium design, and the surrounding forested hills are consistent with the actual geography north of the city.
Sendai City Attractions
Sendai is one of Tohoku’s most vibrant cities — the Jozenji Street zelkova tree boulevard, Zuihoden mausoleum, Sendai Castle ruins (Aoba Castle), and the spectacular Tanabata Festival in August make it a rewarding destination beyond the anime pilgrimage.
Access
Sendai is 90 minutes from Tokyo on the Tohoku Shinkansen. The city has an excellent subway and bus network. A rental car gives access to the mountain areas north of Sendai featured in the series.
Best Time to Visit
Sendai’s Tanabata Festival (August 6-8) is one of Japan’s most spectacular seasonal events. Autumn foliage in the Miyagi mountains (October to November) recreates the series’ mountain scenery at its most beautiful.
