AnimeJapan is the world’s largest anime event — held annually in late March at Tokyo Big Sight (Tokyo International Exhibition Center) in Odaiba. The event combines an industry trade show with a massive public fan event, attracting over 130,000 visitors across four days. For international visitors timing their Japan trip to coincide with AnimeJapan, it represents the most comprehensive possible overview of the Japanese anime industry’s current and upcoming productions.
What Happens at AnimeJapan
Major studios present their upcoming season productions — trailers, key visuals, and voice cast announcements are made from the main stages. Booths from every significant anime production company, distributor, merchandise manufacturer, and broadcaster fill the enormous exhibition halls. Limited-edition event goods — only available at the event — are sold in enormous quantities, with queues forming before opening for the most anticipated releases.
Stage Events
The main stages host voice actor appearances, anime screenings with director commentary, and announcement events. International guests appear regularly. The stage schedule is released in advance on the official website — popular events require early positioning for good viewing spots.
Family AnimeJapan
A dedicated Family AnimeJapan area covers children’s anime programming — PreCure, Doraemon, Anpanman, and other family properties — with interactive activities and character appearances suitable for younger visitors.
Access
Tokyo Big Sight is in Odaiba, Tokyo Bay. Take the Yurikamome line from Shimbashi (about 30 minutes) to Kokusai-Tenjijo-Seimon station. The Rinkai Line also serves Tokyo Big Sight station directly. From central Tokyo, the journey takes 30 to 40 minutes.
Planning Your Visit
Purchase tickets in advance through Lawson or other convenience store ticket systems — day-of tickets are sometimes available but popular sessions sell out. Hotel accommodation in Tokyo fills quickly during the event period — book months in advance.
