The 1990s manga and anime Slam Dunk (スラムダンク) by Takehiko Inoue is one of the most beloved sports series in Japanese pop culture history, and the 2022 film The First Slam Dunk renewed international interest in the Shonan coast locations. The most famous image — Hanamichi Sakuragi and the Shohoku team at the Kamakurako-Kokomae railway crossing with the sea behind them — has become one of anime’s most iconic pilgrimage spots.
Kamakurako-Kokomae Station
The level crossing at Kamakurako-Kokomae station on the Enoden (Enoshima Electric Railway) line is the most visited Slam Dunk pilgrimage site. The single-track railway, the sea visible between the buildings behind, and the residential street match the anime’s famous scene closely. Fans queue on the narrow path beside the crossing to recreate the image — be respectful of local residents who live and work here.
Enoshima Island
The island of Enoshima, connected to the mainland by a bridge, provides the backdrop for several scenes. The lighthouse, sea caves, and the approach street lined with seafood restaurants and souvenir shops are worth exploring. The view back towards the Kamakura coastline from Enoshima’s observatory is outstanding.
Access
Take the Odakyu Line from Shinjuku to Fujisawa (about 60 minutes), then the Enoden to Kamakurako-Kokomae (15 minutes). Kamakura city — famous for the Great Buddha and ancient temples — is on the same Enoden line and combines perfectly with the anime pilgrimage.
Best Time to Visit
Any season works — the sea views are beautiful year-round. Summer brings swimmers to the Shonan beaches. The hydrangeas at Hasedera temple in Kamakura in June are famous. Avoiding peak summer weekends reduces crowds at the railway crossing.
