Lake Motosu Anime Pilgrimage Guide: Laid-Back Camp Sacred Sites in Yamanashi

Laid-Back Camp (ゆるキャン△) follows teenage girls camping in the scenic countryside around Mount Fuji, and the anime’s meticulous recreation of real Yamanashi locations has made it one of Japan’s most geographically accurate anime series. The iconic image of the series — Rin camping at Lake Motosu with Mount Fuji framed perfectly across the water — uses a real viewpoint that fans can replicate almost exactly.

Lake Motosu

Lake Motosu (本栖湖) is the westernmost of the Fuji Five Lakes, and the view from the northern shore towards Mount Fuji is one of Japan’s most beautiful mountain lake scenes. The campsite at Nakajima Park features in the anime — pitching a tent here with the actual Fuji view is the definitive Yuru Camp pilgrimage experience. The lake’s deep blue colour and Mount Fuji’s reflection on clear mornings are extraordinary.

Minobu and Shimobe

The town of Minobu and the nearby hot spring town of Shimobe also feature extensively in Laid-Back Camp. Minobu’s famous Kuonji Temple on Mount Minobu — a major Nichiren Buddhism site — provides a cultural dimension to the pilgrimage. The route between Minobu and Lake Motosu follows mountain roads with spectacular scenery.

Access

Take the JR Chuo Line from Shinjuku (Tokyo) to Kofu (about 90 minutes), then a bus to Lake Motosu (about 60 minutes). A rental car from Kofu gives the most flexibility for visiting multiple Yuru Camp locations across Yamanashi.

Best Time to Visit

Autumn camping season (October to November) recreates the atmosphere of the anime most closely. Winter camping — brave and cold, but with Mount Fuji in its most dramatic snow-capped form — is the hardcore fan experience. Spring cherry blossoms around the Fuji Five Lakes are spectacular.
