The Serengeti ecosystem in Tanzania is the stage for the world’s greatest wildlife migration — and one of Africa’s finest birding destinations, with over 500 recorded species in grassland, woodland, and riverine habitats.
Key Species
The Secretarybird strides the open grassland, stamping prey to death with powerful legs. The Kori Bustard — the world’s heaviest flying bird — performs dramatic throat-puffing displays. Bateleur, Martial Eagle, and Augur Buzzard soar over the plains. Secretary Bird, Lilac-breasted Roller, and Superb Starling add colour to the savanna.
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from June to October brings the Great Migration and best game-viewing conditions. The wet season from November to May brings European and Asian migrants and the wildebeest calving season.
Travel Tips
Fly from Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjaro to Seronera airstrip. A specialist birding guide is highly recommended. Binoculars and a spotting scope are essential.
