Key Species
Bean Geese, Tundra Swans, and Greater White-fronted Geese winter on the northern lake. Tufted Duck, Smew, Goldeneye, and the rare Falcated Duck concentrate on open water. White-tailed Eagle patrols the shore. Great Reed Warbler and Eurasian Bittern breed in the reed beds.
Best Time to Visit
Winter is peak season for wildfowl. Spring brings reed warblers and marsh terns on passage. Summer is best for breeding herons and kingfishers on the rivers.
Travel Tips
Lake Biwa is a 15-minute train ride from Kyoto. The northern lake near Hikone is best for winter ducks. Cycling the lake perimeter passes many excellent birding spots.
