Japan on a Budget: How to Travel Japan Without Breaking the Bank

Japan has a reputation for being expensive, but that reputation is not entirely fair. Yes, you can spend a fortune here. But you can also have an incredible trip without spending much at all. Here is how.

Eat at Convenience Stores and Gyudon Chains

Some of the best meals in Japan cost almost nothing. Convenience stores like 7-Eleven and Lawson sell fresh onigiri for around 120 yen, hot sandwiches for 200 yen, and full bento boxes for under 600 yen. Gyudon chains like Yoshinoya and Sukiya serve beef rice bowls from around 400 yen. You can eat very well in Japan for under 1,500 yen a day if you know where to look.

Get an IC Card Instead of Buying Single Tickets

Single-journey train tickets in Japan are slightly more expensive than using a prepaid IC card like Suica or Pasmo. Pick one up at any major train station for 500 yen deposit and load it with cash. You can use it on almost all trains and buses in the country, and even pay at convenience stores and vending machines.

Skip the Japan Rail Pass If You Are Staying in One Region

The JR Pass gets a lot of attention, but it is only worth buying if you are traveling long distances between cities. If you plan to spend most of your trip in Tokyo, Kyoto, or Osaka, local IC cards and regional tickets will be cheaper. Do the math before you buy.

Stay in Hostels or Capsule Hotels

Japan has some of the best hostels in the world. Clean, well-run, and often in great locations, you can find a dorm bed in Tokyo for 2,500 to 4,000 yen per night. Capsule hotels are another option – private sleeping pods with shared bathrooms, often including access to a bathhouse, from around 3,000 yen. Both are perfectly comfortable and a great way to meet other travelers.

Visit Free Temples, Shrines, and Parks

Many of Japan’s most beautiful attractions are completely free. Fushimi Inari in Kyoto, Senso-ji in Tokyo, Nara Park with its deer – all free. Most public parks and gardens charge nothing. Big cities like Tokyo have dozens of free museums and art galleries. You could spend two weeks in Japan and barely pay an entrance fee.

Drink From Vending Machines

Japan has one of the highest densities of vending machines in the world. A cold drink costs around 130 to 160 yen almost everywhere. In summer heat or after a long day of walking, buying from a vending machine is cheap, fast, and surprisingly satisfying. Hot drinks are available in winter too.

Travel Overnight by Highway Bus

Night buses between Tokyo and Osaka or Kyoto can cost as little as 3,000 to 5,000 yen – a fraction of the Shinkansen price. They depart late at night and arrive in the morning, saving you a night of accommodation too. They are comfortable enough for a good sleep if you book a private or semi-private seat.

Use the 100 Yen Shops

Daiso and Seria are 100 yen shops where almost everything costs exactly 100 yen. Toiletries, snacks, small souvenirs, stationery, kitchen items – the range is enormous. If you forgot something or need to pick up travel essentials, the 100 yen shop beats any pharmacy or tourist shop on price.

Eat a Big Lunch, Not a Big Dinner

Many restaurants in Japan offer lunch sets that are significantly cheaper than the same dishes at dinner. A restaurant that charges 3,000 yen per person at night might offer a set lunch for 1,000 yen. Shift your main meal to lunchtime and keep dinner light and cheap.

How Much Does a Budget Trip to Japan Actually Cost?

A realistic daily budget for Japan, staying in hostels and eating cheaply, is around 5,000 to 8,000 yen per day excluding transport between cities. That is roughly 35 to 55 USD. It is not the cheapest country in Asia, but it is far from the most expensive either – and the quality of everything you get for that money is exceptionally high.

Final Thoughts

Japan rewards travelers who do a little planning. The expensive version of Japan exists if you want it, but so does a very affordable one. With some basic knowledge of where to eat, sleep, and get around, Japan is accessible to almost any budget.
