The Ultimate Kyoto 3-Day Itinerary — Beyond the Tourist Trail

Kyoto is Japan’s cultural heart — but most visitors only see the famous landmarks. With a little planning, you can experience a side of Kyoto that feels like it’s from a different century.

Day 1: East Kyoto — Temples & Geisha Districts

Start at Kiyomizudera Temple before 8 AM — the early light is stunning and the crowds haven’t arrived yet. Walk down Ninenzaka & Sannenzaka, two beautifully preserved stone-paved lanes lined with traditional shops. End the afternoon in Gion, Kyoto’s famous geisha district, where you might spot a maiko (apprentice geisha) heading to an evening appointment.

💡 Pro TipKiyomizudera opens at 6 AM. Arriving right at opening means near-empty grounds and incredible golden hour photos.

Day 2: Arashiyama — Bamboo Forest & Hidden Temples

The famous Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is at its best before 7:30 AM. After exploring, head deeper into the hills to Jojakko-ji Temple — a hidden gem with stunning moss gardens that most tourists skip entirely. Cross the Togetsukyo Bridge for the classic Arashiyama photo at sunset.

Day 3: Fushimi Inari — Climb to the Summit

The thousands of vermillion torii gates at Fushimi Inari are iconic — but only about 10% of visitors ever reach the summit of Inari Mountain (a 2–3 hour hike). The view from the top, with minimal crowds, is one of Japan’s best kept secrets.

🚂 Getting AroundThe ICOCA card (loaded IC card) works on all trains and buses in Kyoto. Buy one at Kyoto Station for ¥500 deposit + top-up amount.
